The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) has declared a 6-week seasonal labour shortage across Hawke’s Bay, which will run from 25 February to 5 April 2019.
MSD made the declaration following discussions with leaders from the pipfruit industry and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
Forecasts suggest the peak harvest season for the Hawke’s Bay pipfruit industry will run until mid-May 2019. There is currently a worker shortage of about 300 to 400 people.
Declaring a seasonal labour shortage means overseas visitors who already hold visitor visas, including those from visa waiver countries, can apply for a variation of conditions to work for up to 6 weeks in the affected region.
The situation will be closely monitored and MSD will reassess the declaration in 4 weeks’ time. If the labour shortage does not improve, then MSD will consider extending the declaration.
